Politik und Geschichte:
Jewish Life in Dresden
Already in the medieval ages a synagogue stood in Dresden – within the city fortification. This first epoch of Jewish settlement in Saxony ended in 1430 under Friedrich der Sanftmütige (Friedrich the Gentle). Thanks to Augustus the Strong a couple of Jewish families officially started a new period in Dresden in the early 18th century. But only 100 years later they were allowed to found their own legal community in Dresden. In the beginning of the 20th century Dresden’s Jewish community sees its peak-time, which suddenly ends in 1933. This walking tour shows the rare traces of this history. We can include a visit to the new Jewish synagogue and / or to the Jewish cemeteries. Please notice that additional costs are added for the synagogue or cemeteries. They are only open for the registered time.

Behind the dark light awaits you – The New Israelite Cemetery and biographical traces
This is a walking tour across the New Israelite Cemetery.
During the registration of this new cemetery, the project workers discovered various biographies of Jewish artists, which seem (with no right) to be forgotten in Dresden. Many of those artists were part of the famous and open art scene in town. The Nazis ended a great Jewish-art-period. The remembrance of those artists is goal of our walk. The tour is completed with historic facts and information about the artists and the cemetery itself.
